Thanks for your comment Kelly. For me it’s also great to have met you!

Eclipse is eclipsing Visual Studio

A two weeks-old news, but very important in the IDE arena.

According to a Evans Data Winter 2006 EMEA Development Survey (almost 400 developers ), “the adoption rate of Eclipse has more than doubled in the EMEA region, making it the first IDE to challenge Microsoft Visual Studio.NET among developers there”.

John Andrews, Evans Data president, told that “Microsoft has dominated languages since the early ’90s, but we are seeing much more parity now”. Anyway, Visual Studio is the de facto IDE for most engineers, despite it’s dramatic erosion.

Software Factories

I get a copy of the last The Architecture Journal, by Microsoft, obtained by my manager at the Microsoft Strategic Architect Forum (SAF).

This issue is focused on “Software Factories” (I don’t like this name, it could be confusing) and it has nice articles that explains some experiences with DSL and how to fit into the software factories methodology. One of the articles is from Jack Greenfield, co-author of Software Factories: Assembling Applications with Patterns, Models, Frameworks, and Tools.

JOT: Journal of Object Technology

I just have discovered an online publication, called Journal of Object Technology (JOT) and published six times per year by the ETH Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, that has lots of excellent articles.

The mission of JOT is to present its readers with timely, well-written, and interesting state-of-the-art papers and special features (columns, book reviews, software reviews) dealing with every aspect of object technology both theoretical and practical. Topics include OOA, OOD, patterns, OODBMS, OO languages, components and case studies. The columns, both guest and regular, are written by recognized specialists and experts in the field.

RTube: What keeps me Rational?

Starting December 23, a new initiative from the fun & leisure department at IBM Rational goes live: IBM Rational Tube.

If you are a RSDC 2007 registered member, you could post a 90 seconds video showing “What Keeps Me Rational”, as “that terrific Rational product or solution that saved you money, time, and possibly your sanity”. Participants will become eligible to win prizes and recognition at the upcoming conference (I’m imagining Kelly saying “and the Oscar goes to …”).

If I don’t get to go to RSDC 2007 this year, I’m going to be sooooooo crankypants. 🙂
